An arena match between Gresh and an unknown Skrall
Arena matches were gladiatorial fights fought in arenas across Bara Magna, forming the basis of the planet's social system following the Shattering until to the Attack on Tajun. Their main purpose was to allow the competing tribes to resolve disputes over resources without having war break out.
History[]
Following the Shattering, resources became scarce on Bara Magna. To prevent conflicts from arising between the competing tribes, several Glatorian--Tarix, Certavus, Ackar, and Vastus--came together to develop a system where tribes could claim resources by employing warriors to fight over them in arena battles. After many veterans spoke out against the system, Tarix wrote the Glatorian Creed, which explained the need for the system, and outlined the rules of combat.
Upon arriving in Bara Magna, Tuma witnessed the system and forced the Rock Tribe to join it. The Skrall remained undefeated in battle for an entire year, and eventually abandoned the system on the order of Tuma, attacking the city of Atero. However, the system continued among the other tribes until Mata Nui arrived at Tesara with the declaration that the Bone Hunters had allied with the Skrall. The Glatorian agreed to end the Arena Match system, and instead united the villages against their common enemy.
Great Tournament[]
Every year, a tournament was held in the Arena Magna, and the winner of the tournament was declared champion of the Glatorian. There was also a vehicle division, for combat involving battle machines.
Rules[]
Arena matches that were governed by a code of rules, described in the Glatorian Creed. These rules included that a Glatorian won when their opponent called defeat or was unable to fight, and that after this calling of defeat, the fighting was to stop. The violation of these rules could lead to a Glatorian being exiled from their tribe to the Wastelands.
In combat, Glatorian were allowed to utilize any weaponry he or she held. They fought purely on strength and skill, and relied on their proficiency with their tools. Weapons with special properties were often prohibited from being activated, though the weapon itself was allowed to be used. Specialized Glatorian were also allowed to pilot vehicles in matches, provided that others were also driving machines.
Agori accompanying them into battle were allowed to utilize their own weapons, and were also permitted to fight by piloting vehicles.
