Bohrok are insect-like, mechanical creatures that are piloted by Krana. Created from former Av-Matoran, their main purpose was to clean the surface of the Great Spirit Robot.
History[]
The Bohrok and their Bahrag queens were created by the Great Beings. The creatures were originally designed to destroy any remaining camouflage on the Great Spirit Robot, to facilitate the robot's departure. The Bohrok were also designed similarly to a previous creation of the Great Beings, the Baterra. A small proportion of Av-Matoran were destined to transform into Bohrok, bolstering the creatures' numbers.
The Brotherhood of Makuta were aware of the Bohrok and were deeply afraid of the creatures' awakening. To combat the potential threat, they placed suits of Exo-Toa armor near any Bohrok hives. They also contracted a group of Nynrah Ghosts to construct mechanical replicas of the creatures. These "False Bohrok" would come to be known as Fohrok and saw little use against the swarms.
The Matoran first discovered the existence of Bohrok in Metru Nui, where a group of miners accidentally drilled into a nest near Onu-Metru. This excavation would catapult many Archivists' careers and lead to the popularization of the Bohrok in Matoran fiction. Several of these dormant Bohrok were shipped to the Archives, where studies by the Archivists revealed that the creatures were entirely inorganic. However, the true nature of the Bohrok remained a mystery, as did their organic Krana.
Mata Nui[]
Several Bohrok Nests were hidden underneath the island of Mata Nui. Prior to the Great Cataclysm, Makuta Teridax experimented with the Bohrok, but found them difficult to control and abandoned the project in favor of the plant-based Karzahni and Morbuzakh.
A thousand years after the Great Cataclysm, Teridax was defeated by the Toa Mata. Unwilling to accept defeat, the Makuta prematurely awoke the Bohrok swarms beneath Mata Nui. As part of their programming, the Bohrok began cleansing the island, destroying the villages and landmasses that were present.

Abilities and Traits[]
Bohrok, as non-sentient robotic beings, must be controlled by a Krana to function properly. The Krana are given telepathic commands from the Bahrag queens, and can be used to assimilate bio-mechanical beings into the swarm. Without their Krana, the Bohrok revert to a inert state, but can be modified to obey simple verbal commands.
Bohrok also possess extendable necks, allowing them to quickly snap their heads forward. This ability can be used to chip away at obstacles or to fling their Krana towards hostile beings.
The Bohrok naturally compress themselves into a spherical shape while lying dormant. This form can also be used for travel, rolling across the ground at high speeds. When fitted with Krana Vu, they can also fly short distances.
Bohrok have the ability to form a Kaita, much like other Matoran Universe inhabitants. This fusion combines the abilities of the individual three Bohrok into one stronger being. Bohrok do not typically use this power and rely upon it only when faced with an insurmountable obstacle.
Breeds[]
There were six main types of Bohrok.
- Tahnok - Bohrok of Fire
- Gahlok - Bohrok of Water
- Levahk - Bohrok of Acid
- Pahrak - Bohrok of Stone
- Kohrak - Bohrok of Ice
- Nuhvok - Bohrok of Earth
Each type of Bohrok can channel their element through their shields. The six breeds carry out their tasks in different ways and are typically assisted by one or more corresponding Bohrok Va.
Sentient Bohrok[]
Rarely, some Bohrok gained sentience. It is unknown what causes the mechanical creatures to become cognizant, but common factors include exposure to Energized Protodermis or experimentation from the Great Beings.
Known sentient Bohrok include:
- Aator
- Adloch
- Bohrok-Kal
- Chahrak-Kal
