The Mask of Psychometry was a Kanohi that allowed the user to perceive the residual information of an object by touching it. Once the Kanohi was activated, the bearer could use it to experience historical memories or sensations concerning a subject, allowing them to learn an object's makers, users, and even those who have on passing used the object, though it only affords the bearer unspecified glimpses.

Notably, the mask cannot be used on living beings, nor can it be used on multiple subjects at any given time.

History[]

The Mask of Psychometry traces its origins back to some of the earliest mask-making techniques adopted on Spherus Magna, where an unclear number of the Kanohi were created for the Matoran populace. At this point in the history of the Matoran Universe, the Mask of Psychometry became heavily associated with Onu-Matoran.

Exceedingly few Masks of Psychometry have been produced owing to the extremely temperamental Kanoka combination and requirement of additional non-Kanoka components. However, in the 100,000 years the Matoran Universe was in operation, a few noteworthy individuals possessed the Mask. Favored in particular by tacticians and historians, many found the mask to be incredibly situational and useless, pushing them further into obscurity.

In Metru Nui, Masks of Psychometry could be crafted with relative ease using a complex combination of unknown Kanoka disks and Knowledge Crystals. Requiring specific Kanoka disks to manufacture and generally considered impractical, the Kanohi was a typically uncommon mask in Metru Nui, with only a handful of Mask Makers either willing or able to craft it.

The most notable bearer of the Mask of Psychometry was Helryx, the First Toa leader of the Order of Mata Nui. Awarded her Kanohi by the Great Beings, Helrys was given a Mask of Psychometry in consideration of the grand legacy she would have, allowing her to look to the past for guidance and wisdom in leading both the Toa and the Order of Mata Nui. Moreover this Kanohi possessed implicit espionage purposes, enabling her to detect tampering, origin, and ownership of items.

From its earliest inception, the Mask of Psychometry became heavily associated with Onu-Matoran as the manifestation of their Elemental discipline. As such, a Noble Mask of Psychometry was displayed prominently in the Archives.

Trivia[]

  • Use of a Mask of Psychometry often left a telepathic imprint of the bearer, allowing telepathically-enabled species to sense the mask's activation. However, having spent much of her time studying Ce-Matoran, Toa Helryx has notably learned to circumvent this Psionic Imprint.
  • A bearer could use a Mask of Psychometry to ascertain the wider function of a machine if one of its components were a subject, though it could not reveal the inner mechanics.
